Natalie Bradbury came in as a guest speaker to talk about her zine Shrieking Violet. She began the zine in 2009 as a guide to the small places in Manchester that go unseen. Almost an alternative shopping guide to Manchester.
Natalie talked to us about how she first began to develop the zine and how she began to distribute it as well as talking about collaborations she has been involved with because of her zine and collaborations within her own zine.
Natalie first wanted to create a zine after growing up with parents with a large collection of different zines, especially punk zines. She was inspired and supported by her parents to create her own zine named the Shrieking Violet.
Natalie discussed how she designed her zine through the method of trial and error, my favorite aspect of 'The Shrieking Violet' is that she gets a different artist or illustrator to do the front cover for every issue, she gives them complete freedom and they can do anything they wish as long as it has the title on. I really like this idea as although the zine is Natalie's publication she also gets to wonder about what each issue will look like and whether she will like it or not.
Through doing this I believe she has chosen a great way of collaborating with others, she also accepts art reviews and short stories or poems if people wish to put something in her zine, once again I think this is a great way to collaborate with people with similar interests.
From Natalie's talk I feel like I have learnt aspects of design and distribution which can be linked in with our own zine and hopefully help us with the process of making and selling our own zines.
